July 21, 201312 yr Hi everyoneName is Bill Johnson, born in 1948 in Blyth. Left school in 1963 to work down Bates Pit, married a Bedlington lass in 1969 & moved to Bedlington & have lived here ever since, apart from a spell in the Army from 71-74. Had played in a band called Merlin from 1965-1971 moving down to London in the last year (super memories of the band). Left the Army & went back down the pit, Ellington this time. Also some great memories & some great friends, finished as an overman in 1989 and drove artic's until I retired in 2013. Nearly forgot.... along with George Bowey we formed 'Bedlington Juniors Football Club' in 1984 starting with 2 teams & taking the strength up to 8 teams before I left in 1989. Just love Bedlington.

August 11, 201312 yr Author Welcome to the Bedlington Forum Bill (but be careful what you say about Blyth! some members are a bit touchy as they were "sent to PLR†in their youth) I'm also from Blyth but I went to Newlands! Hi Vic, thanks for the welcome. To be honest, i can't blame anyone who went to PLR under duress for hating it. I went because I had to, along with all my mates, you could say that we knew no better. But looking back it had to be the worst Secondary Modern in the North East. Definitely a school that had very little interest in educating it's pupils, not all, but most of the teachers were not iterested in the pupils. It was very common for a teacher in my time there (60's) to turn up for class late, set us a piece of work on the board, tell us to open our text books at a certain page, tell us to get on with it and then disappear (I assume to the Staff Room) until the end of the lesson. So anyone HAVING to attend PLR in those days has my utmost symathy. They would have learned very little.

Your'e right, Georgie was a good man along with a lot of other good men who gave up their time to make the club what it was then. Mind you it was very amusing when we outlined the rapid expansion we had planned to the commitee. I think a few of them were on the verge of heart attacks, especially when we told them it would take £10.000 a year to finance it. Ahh, happy days.
