Hi Ho Hi Ho Its Off To The Work House We Go!
Malcolm Robinson replied to Monsta®'s topic in Talk of the Town
Monsta, That is the whole point as far as I can see! Making economic regeneration a top priority has far more benefits than just penalising those on benefits. Every time a Tory government comes in the first thing they do is target anyone not in work, for whatever reason. That's fair enough if there are jobs available but if there aren't, and in fact if they are going to make the situation worse, it looks like playing to ideology rather than realism! -

If you look you can find the average housing benefit cut for this area, about a tenner a week! http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/nov/07/unemployed-unpaid-work-lose-benefits -
Yep and only on roads that have no pot holes or gravel scattered around each corner and junction!

Get with the program......don't you know we are all in this together! Seems some are more in this than others! All this stuff and not one banker in jail???????? -
Mr D, The thing which gets me is no one seems to be allowing for the clientele the Red Lion will be trying to attract now. These are not the 'get wasted ASAP on a pub crawl', if that was the case there would be blearing music, alcopop offers and flashing lights all over. Look at the clientele Wetherspoons pitches at, these are not people who will have a pint or two in every pub up and down the Street as was the fashion years ago. I think your point about how other licenced premises can change and adapt to try and maximise any potential spin off benefits is valid and exactly what they should be thinking of. Eatery's as well need to be thinking about how they will respond.

Toffo, NCC are carrying out a 'traffic survey' at the moment and this should be exactly what is highlighted. The cynic in me would suggest it may well be a justification exercise for imposing parking charges throughout South East Northumberland! There is an online survey anyone can fill out as well as several public meetings but as I noted on another thread we (and Newbiggin) don't seem to warrant having a public meeting here to discuss the issues? -

Merlin, In a former life I looked out onto that Glebe Road crossing every day and I saw and heard many near misses and sometimes hits! If they had filled the subway in and put that crossing on top of that location it would leave far more spaces for cars to wait while people crossed the dual carriageway. That would stop the roundabout blockages which occur at peak times. Also if you consider driving up Front Street and turning right down to Choppington you are on top of that crossing almost before you see it, certainly if you don't know it's there. You look left to make sure the traffic stops at the Red Lion then left again to make sure it stops at the Wharton then your turning off the roundabout to hit a crossing straightaway. It's a pitiful design going down that road, coming up quite the opposite because cars see pedestrians in plenty of time and are able to stop without causing a backup. On a personal note try driving up to that roundabout from Ridge Terrace and turning left onto the dual carriageway in a left hooker. -

Toffo, I think the real trouble here is the insane usage of what is really a cut into a back lane for a school entrance. With the increase in pupils there the problem was always going to escalate. It isn't just Bedders which has this problem, this keeps cropping up time and time again at County Council Area Meetings with areas in Blyth and Cramlington being similarly affected. The answer is almost always yellow paint but that doesn't really solve the problem. For whatever reasons, and some will be valid, a lot of parents have decided to drop their kids off as close to their schools as possible. That should be catered for in this day and age not criminalised. As for a 5 minute walk if everyone took that on board probably 99% of the traffic problems would disappear! -

I agree Merlin but I think you will find that until there is a FATALITY an Authority doesn't really HAVE to do something. Seems like locking the door after the horse has bolted to me. I would have thought in these cases prevention is of paramount importance? I think the crossing at the top of Glebe Road is another accident waiting to happen and the zebra crossing at the Northumberland corner another one, don't know how you would get around that one though? -
Thought the quote off Lord what-sis-name the outgoing leader (Parker) was a scream. Something like, ''Hmm yes, I'm not too good at this politics malarkey and maybe I should have read our manifesto!'' There's honesty! At least we know where we are with Nige , anti-EU crusader.

The Traffic In And Out Of Meadowdale Middle School
Malcolm Robinson replied to debrad65's topic in Talk of the Town
Toffo, Don't think we are going to see any new schools built in the foreseeable, seeing as the proposed Academy one at the Station has been scrapped and existing ones cannot even get the funds to cover necessary repairs and maintenance. Resident parking schemes are too complicated to work out in a lot of cases. As a 'visitor' you usually have to be a mathematical genius to work out if you are allowed to park there and at what times. They also carry some degree of administration charge and that can be wiped out with a can of yellow paint! I think the yellow paint option will be the one NCC go for and back it up with an initial splurge on any violators. Personally I think they should just use a 'clearway' at certain times so as not to penalise residents who know full well not to park near that junction at school times. As for blocking the back lane Merlin, that happened many times when I lived there. I found that blocking them in and walking away for a cuppa usually had the desired effect! -

There was talk about lollipop men and women becoming traffic wardens after they do their normal hours and at a guess I would think the one at Ridge Terrace could pay for himself many times over! Again this is not the solution but until a sensible solution to the problem is found the box of sticking plasters will always be kept at hand. -
Signed and sealed Brian, even had the two glorious leaders smoozhing with each other over it on TV.

Hillbilly, Been trying to find out the position regarding Tescos and planning permissions. Next planning meeting is 16th this month so if they haven't got the go ahead I presume they will get it then. Think monsta nailed the terrier site, care home for special needs.

''Good job it is the BEGINNING of the 21 century, that just means France hasn't as yet lost an armed engagement or walked out of an ex colony leaving a trail of utter destruction behind! Also considering the joint nature of the proposition we might like to insert a master switch into all France aircraft and Exocet missiles so they can still be sold to other foreign governments but if WE ever face them again we can flick the switch and take them out of the engagement without loss of life!''
