  1. My old man was a steward so forst pint when I was about 12 sitting at the end of the night with the bar staff.

    1s 5d ordinary and 1s 8d for best.

Ordinary in hogsheads Best in firkins if I remember.  Whacking in the taps was something else!

Surely beer was sold in FLAGGONS when you were a kid Malcolm !!
  2. The way that Man City are scoring goals at the moment, I wouldn't bet against Slumderland being on the receiving end of a record trouncing at Wembley. Symptons may not be too far away with his score prediction.

  3. Is there a way for members to do a search of the membership list that narrows the list down to active members, using parameters such as those who have either posted or visited in the past 3, 6 or 12 months? The present list is very large and is mostly of non active even deceased members!

I second that. It needs a good clean out .
  4. They live a couple of doors from me. Barry (Holly's Dad ) told me that the tree planting would affect a handful of houses that back onto the Welwyn field and he seems to think that mine is included. Well they wont be taking any of my garden (they mentioned nothing to me at the consultation meeting). They can take their trees and plant them somewhere else and it will be so much more painful for them than it will be for me !!. As far as I am aware the properties that are ear marked for tree planting, one is empty and the other tenants don't want the trees.

  5. The four houses are to be knocked down to make way for a car park and a new pedestrian entrance to the field. The field will have a new boundary fence and will be planted with trees / shrubs and some re landscaping with seating etc. The current pedestrian entrance will possibly be closed off.

The 2 bed houses will have new kitchens with French windows to the rear. The empty 3 bed houses will be converted to 2 beds as will some of the other 3 bedroom houses that are occupied by those who don't require 3 bedrooms

The bathrooms in the 3 bed houses will be moved into the small bedroom directly above. The side door will be blocked up and the kitchen enlarged into a kitchen diner. An extension will be built and behind where the bathroom was will be a stand alone shower, w.c. and utility room with a door to the garden, above will be the replacement bedroom.

Garden fences will be replaced where necessary, some trees will be planted, untidy gardens will be tidied up and tenants told to keep the tidy!

Nothing will be done to the front of the houses except that those that are rendered will be painted. New roofs will go on with new guttering and facias etc.

Much of this has come about in response to pressure from the Burnside Estate Residents Group and tenants in general. I asked if there would be any cameras put up especially in the new car park, they said no but speed bumps will be put in, maybe they could be persuaded differently as it would be a small cost in the scheme of things.

It has also a lot to do with the way the current residents have behaved, very rarely do you see a police car in the estate with lights flashing etc. I think there has only been 1 occasion in the past year or so. People on this estate who wanted to move have taken their names off the homefinder site. A family who have had their house on the market for four years, finally got a buyer , at the asking price, they knocked it back and took the house off the market because they are happy here now. There are people asking to move to the estate now so we must be doing something right.

I have ALLWAYS said that there are plenty of good people living in Burnside but the few a*****es living here gave the place a bad name. They have been shipped out and the results are there for all to see. Just proves what can happen when people stick together and make things happen.

  6. That's interesting, what you say about your Donkey-stone substitute, Maggie. Was it for cleaning steps from moss? I thought it was purely for decorative purposes.

Keith, nice to see a member of the male species who admits to being romantic!

    FOUR SMELLS WITH ME.

    1) The pages of musty old books takes me right back to the Station Library where I used to get my Hardy Boys books.

    2) Fish and chips always reminds me of the Wallaw - we used to come out of there and go to Wales' chip shop for our supper.

    3) Aniseed reminds me of the Domino / Lucy's where I used to drink Pernod.

    4) Fresh cut grass always reminds me of a girl I fell in love with during the summer.

All these smells are like a time-tunnel to me.

Were you rolling around in the grass with your girlfriend ........ or was she eating it ??  . Maybe not so romantic after all Canny Lass !!!

  7. A sad moment was announced today (16th January) that Roger Lloyd-Pack has Died from pancreatic cancer. I am a fan of Roger Lloyd-Pack performance's in all the films and TV Series he was in, he was one of the best and he will be sadly missed, Rest In Peace Roger Lloyd-Pack.

Well said Adam , terrific actor and brilliant comic.   ...... " I've had the same broom for 20 years , only had 10 shanks and 15 brush heads "  Trigger, OFAH     (don't hold me on the numbers though )

  8. Keith,

The statutory consultative authority for that will be the East Bedlington Parish Council.

We have just seen even when Town and parish councils put in concerns and votes to deny permission the NCC planners take little or even no notice.

Is Bernicia now more or less responsive to community needs after their recent reorganisation? E

EBPC and our County Councillor know nothing of any plans to demolish houses to make way for a car park, or for any other development for that matter.  Bernicia representatives even had the gall to tell the tenants living in the affected houses to keep quiet about it until after the drop in, / information meeting arranged for 15th Jan at the Station club. We all want improvements and we realise that you cant make an omelette without breaking eggs, there seems to be an excessive amount of eggs being broken here. They are to make improvements to the field and our properties. One thing that does worry me is the amount of demolition and construction traffic using what is an inadequate estate road. We may well like what we see on Wednesday as far as the improvements go, but at what cost ?

  9. Planning meetings !!!   ????   Do Bernicia actually apply for any planning up there ?   Is Bernicia a social landlord or an anti social wrecking ball ?   Recent developments in Burnside suggest the latter.  They announce great improvements then casually knock on the doors of 4 tenants and tell them their properties are to be knocked down to make way for a car park.  AHEM !!!, this is news to the powers that be and news to those involved in the consultation process.

  10. I found this in the loft. Bedlington Church Review from 1962. Unfortunately the front cover and inside page are very tattered and there are pages missing by the looks of it.

Notice  Fred Hostler , headmaster at the Whitley Memorial school was on the Parochial Church Council

  11. Canon Osgathorpe was a laugh a minute, he was a regular visitor to our house (usually when there was a meal on the go ) when we lived at the Market Place. He married my mam and dad and christened me and my three brothers.  My mother knew him from his days at Ulgham, my great Grandparents owned Ugham Manor Farm which is immediately behind the church, (the old house and buildings were converted to houses in the early 80's)

  12. Anybody hear an explosion or something at 1pm exactly today. Or was it Keith blowing out his candles!

No keith Keefy's mates were trying to get his hands out of his pockets and get a round in!

Both of you are nearly right, I only had one candle in the cake that the wife made me, it had a fairly long wick that burned fairly quickly and sparkled, try has I might it wouldn't blow out, there was a helluva bang though and me ears are still ringing ( who is Acme TNT Inc.?

As far as getting a round in , I'm still waiting for the Tankerville to open , its bloody freezing here !!!

  13. George Clark is doing a good job promoting Kielder on C4 with the tree house he is building on Amazing Spaces.

Also that millhouse with the new waterwheel, with all the metal parts coming from.................Bedlington!  Its going to be on again soon I understand.

Is that the one from Thrum Mill. ( I think)  that couple came from Blyth as far as I remember.

  14. I bagsy ? a bottle of your elderberry next summer mmmmmmmm

I had a fly taste of it the other week Eileen when I tested it with a hydrometer , got to say it tasted pretty good . Its still in the demi johns but I might just bottle it this week and leave it till after Easter at least .

  15. Just so everyone knows.

The structure of the Town Council has been changed by a vote of 5 - 4 to abolish all committees and sub groups and replace with one or two full council meetings a month.

Needless to say all the independents voted against the move.

So this means snap decisions will be made on the spot, without any research or consultation. ?
