  1. It's all very well to have bins in public spaces but, and it's a big but, the Council or whoever's responsible in Bedders, needs to regularly empty them. Nothing worse than overflowing bins.

Keith, if plenty of dog turd bins are provided they'll get used; the anti-dog brigade* (I'm not suggesting you K) conveniently avoid complaining about the biggest litter fowlers - kids. Kids need to be brainwashed into having an anti-litter approach ... we were at school and by our parents 'back in the day'; I can honestly say that I have never dropped a bit of litter, ever! That's not me being sanctimonious but suggesting that with proper 'training' good social attitudes will remain.

*those fascists at mumsnet and similar.

Totally agree, I don't mind dogs being walked around the field as long as the owners clean up after them. Dog crap and kids don't mix
  2. Keith ... I'd forgotten the 'plank'; wouldn't be allowed that method today because of 'elf 'n' safety ... ankle-biters tumbling to the floor. I also remember display boxes of 'rubber-jonnies' in the place ...

Aye and he would slap a dollop of brylcream on your head, my mother used to do her nut ha ha
  3. I was sunning myself in the car park, whilst reading Facebook, when a bloke spoke as he walked past with his dog.

The voice was familiar but without my specs on I didn`t see his face properly.

Spoke to him again when he walked back along the river path.

It was ex Street star Ian Mercer (Gary Mallett)

Signed him up for Synergy interview: nice chap

He was living at Bothal Barns the last I heard.
  4. I can remember Newton Foggan, he was a friend of my Dads. Dad used to keep his dormobile van in Newtons garage (bit ramshakled but it was secure). I cant remember the name of his wife, but she was always baking and always had a treat for me when I was there. Newton was a cracking fella, always laughing but I also remember that he would not suffer fools easily. I may be wrong, but I seem to think that he was a policeman at one time. Some of you will remember PC Walter Balance, he used to look in on the Foggans regularly.

  5. Excellent photo, Barton Rafie, here is one of my era. I should be on here but I'm not for some reason, nor are a few of the other regular players. The lad at the bottom left is Keech

Alan Keech. Is he still with us ? not heard of him for years . Also Jai (Gordon Bowron) last I saw of him must have been in 1976 when I was at Kirkley Hall. He appeared one day on a short horticultural course, he was a council gardener.

  6. Now, now, Keithy, it was partly in response to the suggestion that WE might throw ourselves in front of a train in protest to EWD tribute - which is on one of the numerous sites dedicated to EWD, not to mention this one that seems to have been hijacked. Can the moderators please condense EWD issues to one site please. (or bring conclusion to the whole affair on the grounds of agree to disagree.) (PS, trying to type with a cat on my lap - sorry for any typos.)

Must've missed the one about the train.
  7. You should have tried jumping in front of a horse, I hear that is a great publicity grabber and gets you instant martyrdom not to mention a huge following who think it's a sensible thing to do, especially when it's for a worthy cause! (Just joking!!)

I'm keeping it zipped  Would you like grapes or would you prefer I bring you some other (soft) fruit when I visit you in hospital Mr. L ? .
  8. By Jove Symptoms, old bean, you can count Aye she's 101, still carrying sacks of coal to fuel my still in the potting shed, still running to the offy for my crate of 'dog' every night, still warming my wellies in front of the fire. I've recently bought her an ultra silent lawn mower to use, just push and it cuts, as her teeth aren't what they used to be and the lawn was starting to look a bit ragged. I really am too good to her....... I was born in December '55 and it seemed daft that my mother had to go to Rothbury to have me when there was a maternity home almost literally over the road, quarter of a mile away !!

  9. At least they had the decency to keep off the A697, could you imagine the disruption to traffic with all that fighting and bludgeoning going on. Some of them were walking home across the fields to Yetholm after a darts match in the Red Lion at Millfield when they got jumped on by some Jocks who had been slung off the bus on their way from Coldstream to Wooler.

  10. Emily may she rest in peace, was demonised by some politicians and by some elements of the media, after she died.

The great British public voted with their feet and flocked to the London Funeral.

Others lined the route of the the train standing at stations to pay there respects.

In Morpeth crowds gathered to pay witness and respect to a lady who has been described as a local hero.

I guess nothing has changed, there are still elements who do not understand why she did what she did.

I feel that horse racing is dangerous, but I also think the jockeys and horses are more at risk from their own actions than from a young lady with a message.

Well done to the jockey who paid tribute to her.

...... and the actions of that young lady with a message really increased those risks several fold.
