keith lockey Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 Talking of great women, take a look at this lady. I came across her story in a National Geographic DVD. She was awesome!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Bell
Keith Scantlebury Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Beautiful song, she surely was a true Northumbrian.'Tender Hearted'It would have been good to know her, I am sure some of her ancestors are still around. There was a Darling family in Bedlington when I was a kid, I cant remember much about them except for a daughter Audrey who was often seen out and about . She had mental health issues (as far as I remember) and she would wander about with her head tilted to one side. I don't know if there is any of the Darling family left in Bedlington now.
Malcolm Robinson Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 I knew two brothers keef.Ron Darling, used to drink in the Ridge and I can't remember his brother's name.
Canny lass Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 John Darling was in my class at Westridge. Fantastic voice! He was in the Choir at St. Cuthberts Church. I don't know if he was related to Audrey.
Maggie/915 Posted September 1, 2013 Author Report Posted September 1, 2013 The fisher folk of Newbiggin included the name Darling, I understand.

My mam knew their mother from the Glove Factory at Barrington - I think. I'll get back to you on that.
Maggie/915 Posted May 10, 2014 Author Report Posted May 10, 2014 Maz O Connor has a track, on her soon to be released folk album, about Emily Wilding Davison! The album is called 'The Willowed Light'
B Davison Posted May 6, 2023 Report Posted May 6, 2023 I grew up never being allowed to ask about great aunt Em, my family were ashamed of her, I still feel awkward when I think of her
Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 On 06/05/2023 at 05:42, B Davison said: I grew up never being allowed to ask about great aunt Em, my family were ashamed of her, I still feel awkward when I think of her Don't know why they should be ashamed of her - it was Emily's choice. Many will disagree with many different protests and protesters but that's their choice.
