  1. Found it, by-election, yes it should tell a tale alright!
  2. I'm not trying to be smart GGG but what is going on in Clacton October 9th? local election? party elections? (too early for Guy Fawkes day!)
  3. And the solution is?
  4. Happy birthday Malcolm, hope you have a great day!
  5. I still cannot post a photo but did manage to put it on my profile picture
  6. In 1938 it was in very poor condition and needed extensive repairs, I have a photo but I cannot get it to post!
  7. In 1938 it was in very poor condition and needed extensive repairs, I have a photo but I cannot get it to post!
  8. In the book "The people's history Bedlingtonshire remembered†by Evan Martin it states "According to the Swan family (formerly Hirst Head Farm) papers, the Market Cross was erected on its present site in 1782.†In another book by Evan Martin "The Archive Photographs series Bedligtonshire†there is a photograph from 1906 titled "Sunday Best†of six miners posing on a Sunday morning in their Sunday best. On that photograph the ground is disturbed and the paving stones are identical to the picture on the right posted above by Eggy!
  9. Thats what I've seen Soak or $100 donation.
  10. I agree Tonyp, I think it is fantastic how it has grown and the amount of money and awareness it has created, but its just not for me!
  11. The terms "Oil sands†are used in a positive light, "Tar sands†are usually negative! The bituminous deposits are a major resource to Alberta, Canada and the rest of the world. Oil being produced by a civilised country using the latest environmental techniques available, while developing and implementing the highest possible standards in the World. I'd suggest not believing most of the publications coming out of the U.S.
  12. I read a statement of their accounts that said the amount actually going to research has gone up from 7.5% to 10% the rest goes to administration and advertising etc. I only donate to "local funds†for heart and cancer fundraising.
  13. Respect, Pride, Appreciation whatever its called I would think starts in the home and school, but it also comes from todays media! Councils and governments can look after buildings, roads and infrastructures but its family's, schools and youth centres that can instil pride to look after them!I think it is a minority that causes the problems like vandalism and littering. Not sure how you attract businesses to areas that don't appear to support them!
  14. I have just ordered it (used) from Amazon for $ 0.02 cents! And $6 freight!
  15. TomTom, What do you mean by "dead" ? And what would you like to see?
  16. Those that supply daily consumables (milk and bread etc) will probably survive, hairdressers probably come into that category! and possibly some local interest specialty businesses. I think cost has taken over from local service! I enjoy going into the big box stores! (not very often) looking, trying and testing all the options,(computers, TV's etc) tasting fresher food, often getting good advise from experienced assistants, (there are lots of ex-tradesmen sharing their knowledge) picking the right tires, selecting the correct lumber etc I hardly ever buy on line, sometime occasional old car parts. As Malcolm says this is the 21st century, we need to adapt to the technology, (the post office first!)
  17. Its not a term I've heard before but I presume it is not enough people using the business! as much as we like to support local businesses can we afford too? with limited incomes most people will buy at the supermarkets when they are available, just a sad fact of life. Our nearest big name supermarket is over 100 miles away, so we tend to stock up when out of town. Yes our small businesses don't last very long
  18. Are people really selling their houses and moving? where are they going? The faces of small towns are changing, the big box stores, transportation and communications have all had a part in the change. It's not only Bedlington its everywhere, just look at Blyth, Ashington even Newcastle! I could write a book on Grande Cache and the changes in the years we have been here! not all change is bad though it seams so at the time, look for some positive things change brings.
  19. That should read OIL SANDS
  20. Ransoms and dodgy countries would be my guess!
  21. Old technology! great pictures! thanks for posting Foxy, I believe my brother was posted at Leuchers a long time ago,
  22. Tail-sliding, that would be a sight to see!I was working at Farnborough air show about 1974 and saw several Harriers square dancing! going side to side and dipping their noses! all to the music. There is an Scotsman in Calgary trying to sell his Harrier, $1.3 million!
  23. Thanks Foxy, great photos, can almost feel the ground shaking! (good camera? good photographer? or both?)
  24. Thank you Merc' I am "Following†XH558 and a few sites on Facebook, looking forward to the pictures. Was the movie on TV Malcolm?
  25. Just spent quite a bit time looking at footage of Thumper and Vera, along with so many other old aircraft. I have quite a few videos of aircraft and airshows on VHS (what's that?) and was wondering if I should convert them to the latest form of storage, but looking at the availability of much more and far superior on the internet I don't think I'll bother! (This is my old profile picture! not Malcolm, but I can see the resemblance!)
