I accept your explanation why they have their customs and traditions regarding their dress code Canny lass, but I think the link to terrorism is what people fear, whether it is justified or not. When I came to this country I accepted its customs and traditions and do my best to bide by them as I'm sure you did, but that didn't change my personal beliefs, in my house we are just ordinary Geordies but outside we try to be good Canadian citizens, but today more and more immigrants being in the minority are DEMANDING more than equality which often offends the less fortunate citizens. I think education and understanding is required!

I don't think its the Burka that is the real issue I think it is the hiding of the face from identification. I'm told it's not a religious requirement so that should make it easier to resolve. Many places have banned the total covering the face in normal circumstances, no hoodies over the face, no masks or ski masks. We have a case before the courts right now, a Citizenship court refused to allow a woman take part in the ceremony until she removed her face covering, both sides claimed the other side was not respecting their culture! I can guess who will win that one! Facial identification is a big part of todays security, drivers licences, security I.D. Airline travel etc. until the other forms of identification become practical e.g. retina, and fingerprint I think facial I.D. is a must, it can be done discreetly. Q. Do the woman covering their faces still have to go through the body x-ray scan at airports? It wasn't long ago the issue was turbans.

Living so close maybe he would like to go to Bedlington and explain why Bedlington's infrastructure was so much worse than the rest of the area that it required extra money to bring up to the areas standards! He may also explain why you would prefere to travel to shop rather than shop localy!

Congratulations Malcolm, I hope you are able to fulfill some of your goals, if not all! and enjoy your tenure as mayor, make sure you enjoy doing it because when its not fun it becomes hard work! those chains are alright as long as there isn't a ball attached. We still have allotments here, they are about 7-8 miles out of Town though! I still plant in my back garden but only have a short growing season so its spuds, peas, turnips and carrots. (it will be a while yet before planting for this year) Maggie we also kept pigs and chickens in dad's allotment, neighbours used to keep their tettie peelins for us to collect, wasnt much fun muckin them out, dad kept the garden at home for the veggies, and a greenhouse! first thing after work he'd go down to the greenhouse with the salt pot. He'd then pull a radish or parsnip and out with his trusty pocket knife. I have some cine of Granda dibbling a hole and the bairns following popping in the spud and the next one cover it over. Watering and weeding were just part of your duties! (would that be cruel and unusual punishment today)

We are having Provincial elections on Tuesday and have all the same kind of problems as you have, I am voting for the person I trust the most rather than a Party and it's promises. When did an elected party ever fulfil its election promises? During this last session we had at least twelve members cross the floor, one was their Party leader (and then didn't get the nomination for her riding seat in these elections!)so who were we voting for if they cross the floor?

Thanks for posting those photos Brett and Foxy, (you must have caught some of our forum friends! ) great weather for the event, terrific turnout it looks like all ages were well represented. (ah telt wor lass it waas picnic day but she waas still sleapin, 5am!) Take 2000+ votes away and add to the next candidate is a 4000 swing! that is a good start. Wasn't that a sad game Pete? the arrogance of the owner is shameful.

Brian, I was fortunate to visit the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and saw the sculpture of "The man with a donkey†on reading the story of what it was I about I found it was of Jack Simpson V.C. (and Murphy the Donkey). Jack was from South Shields. After that I noticed there were many Anzac memorials and how well kept and respected they were.
