  1. My dad was killed down the pit, Micky - two months before I was born in 1956. (My brother was just under 2 years old) I cannot say I have come across a memorial anywhere.
  2. Excellent article, Barton Rafie, it makes me look at that issue with different eyes, and you are right concerning paying respect - from both the Woman's Movement and the Royals. As I've said since day one on this topic; my gripe has never been with the suffragettes - they should have been given the vote from an early stage - any politician with an ounce of common sense should have seen how important it was. My main gripe is with the reckless action of EWD. She could have done more damage to the Suffragette movement If that jockey had died. The public opinion towards them would have been one of anger, especially if said jockey left a family behind. Points of interest; Did EWD act alone on that day? (Were there other Suffragettes with her at the course?) Was her action sanctioned by her peers? If not, why was she acting alone? Could it be because they would not have condoned such an act? But anyway, a great bit of detective work, Barton, I hadn't come across that anywhere. Well done that man.
  3. When I go into Youtube the images to links down the right hand side are missing. The text is still there but there is no photo in the adjacent box. This has just happened - can anyone explain or advise?
  4. When will the memorial be displayed at St. Cuthberts? Symptoms, I'm sure I saw a memorial at the High School some years ago when I was doing night classes. (I may be wrong) But I know one wall was festooned with notables who had attended the Grammar School.
  5. Happy birthday Foxy. I'll alert the Toon and put them on code red for tonight.
  6. Hey, Eggy, Peter hasn't half made a good job of landscaping your garden.
  7. As listed below - jockey Herbert Jones laid a wreath in honour of EWD. Did anybody from any of the woman's libs groups attended his funeral after he committed suicide, haunted by the face of EWD after she jumped in front of his horse. Or was he just forgotten about, which is very sad, after all, it was s decent gesture on his part towards the memory of EWD. In 1913, Jones rode Anmer, the King's Horse, in the Derby. He was involved in a collision with Emily Davison, the suffragette, who was fatally injured. Jones suffered significant injuries himself, including mild concussion. However he was haunted "by that woman's face" for much longer after the incident. Fifteen years after the death of Emily Davison, Herbert Jones laid a wreath at the funeral of Emmeline Pankhurst in honour of her and Emily Davison.[2] Jones retired from riding in 1923. In 1951, he was discovered to have committed suicide after his son found him in a gas-filled kitchen.[2]
  8. Went down there today, Eggy, with a friend. We also had a go on the exercise machines. It was peaceful as anything down there.
  9. It's just been revealed today that horror film star Peter Cushing once asked Whoopie Goldberg to marry her. She turned him down because she didn't want to be known as Whoopie Cushing.
  10. A nice pair of mashy niblicks, Eggy.
  11. Yeah, that was me, Foxy, I'm big down under.
  12. I still remember the Army and Navy surplus shop at Blyth. I believe it was where Ethel Austins is - was. Me and Maria used to go to Tynemouths land of Green Ginger and they had a memorabalia shop upstairs. You could get WWII medals, knives, helmets, etc. The owner let me handle a Winchester "Yellow Boy" carbine. It weighed a ton.
  13. Those shoes Wilf is wearing remind me of something else...let's see....
  14. Pete's from Burnside if I remember. He is one of the few people I see from my old school days. Of course I look the same as my "Woody" photos - the schoolboy looks and youthful exuberance. In fact if I put a pair of shorts on and an old school tie I could get on the buses for half price. Honest!!!
  15. Great photo, Foxy, Love the skirt that girl is wearing, I have one just like it....er....but I think I know where they may have got the hut. Adam was right about the year. Take a look at the link. http://www.keystothepast.info/Pages/pgDetail.aspx?PRN=N11715
  16. Cheers, Symptoms, I was saying to my brother it could be someone...say like Dixon & Jordan...bought one cheap to house their coaches. (Pure speculation on my part that!) But where would they get one from? The MOD? Bedlington people have seen it and passed by it everyday but no one seems to have any history on it! Fascinating - as Spock would say. (Mr. Spock not the other one.)
  17. "No, not on top of it..."
  18. Now, now, Keithy, it was partly in response to the suggestion that WE might throw ourselves in front of a train in protest to EWD tribute - which is on one of the numerous sites dedicated to EWD, not to mention this one that seems to have been hijacked. Can the moderators please condense EWD issues to one site please. (or bring conclusion to the whole affair on the grounds of agree to disagree.) (PS, trying to type with a cat on my lap - sorry for any typos.)
  19. You should have tried jumping in front of a horse, I hear that is a great publicity grabber and gets you instant martyrdom not to mention a huge following who think it's a sensible thing to do, especially when it's for a worthy cause! (Just joking!!)
  20. Cheers Eggy, I know Pete well, we were good mates at school. (I have sent you a PM with my email address on it. Can you send it to Pete and tell him to get in contact with me if he wants to. it would be nice to hear from him, cheers.) With regards to the photos. Eileen Purdy has contacted me, she is also on this site, and she confirms David Kennedy and the other lad is Graham Lindsay. She also says that isn't Vicky Sedgewick at the back left - she says it is Sue Ryder.
  21. Yeah, Malcolm, that and Jordan's. But why is the Nissan hut there? I mean they are pre- 2nd world war, aren't they? I'm sure I read they hark back to the First World War. So why is one in Bedlington?
  22. I passed the Sierra Hire garage today and caught a glimpse of the nissan hut - set back and to the side of the main building. (The gas tower used to be nearby) Does anyone have any history about the hut.
  23. The American Indians used to call the train the Iron Horse but I think I'll leave jumping in front of moving objects to those who think they know best. Unless it's a nude Kylie Minogue jogging by my house - now I might jump out at that.
  24. Golden rule, Maggie, learnt at great cost, Never open an email unless you know whom its from. I once opened one and got a load of p.rn and another crashed my computer. So do be careful regarding unrecognised emails. Just don't open them.
  25. John, was the submarine HMS Onyx? because we went to see one at Blyth about the same time.
