Hi, I have relatives whose burial services took place at St Cuthbert's Bedlington between the 1860s and 70s, but the records do not say where the person is buried, so can anyone help me with some questions please?

    1. Is there a cutoff date between churchyard burials and Bedlington Cemetery, Netherton Lane? I know the cemetery opened in 1867, but some posts online seem to indicate the churchyard might have some later interments, hence asking.

    2. Is there a plan of the churchyard's graves anywhere, as I doubt there would be any headstones?

    Thank you.

@Miner Granddaughter not something I have ever looked into and i think the only active members that I have noticed posting in connection with St Cuthbert's are @Maggie/915 & @Bedlingtonian

I have joined the N E group, and I have mentioned it on there. I simply think that a 200th anniversary is rather 'special'. Only the Dandie Dinmont has an older pedigree. Contact some local papers etc., get your local TV involved........

Let's know what their response is John:)

Surely, a 200th Anniversary calls for something 'special'?

I did a search John and I the Bedlington Terrier North east Club has a Facebook group but only members can view it and I can't find any way of contacting them outside of that group and i don't want to join the group:)

Found some images online showing phots from the yearly meet up of the group on the 20 acre field in 2021CherylWhite202120acres.jpg.282cffe3730824ba0370dfbd1016b7d8.jpg :

Do the people of Bedlington realise that this year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the first ever litter of pups to be called 'Bedlington Terriers'? Joe Ainsley and Ned Cotes bred that litter in the Vicarage in Bedlington. Ned Cotes ended up in an asylum and Joe Ainsley married and moved away, but there were plenty of others in the town who carried on that breeding. Perhaps there should be a 'celebration' of some kind? I might even turn up to it myself.

They do celebrate the breed @John H Williams - or they used to. There was an annual gathering of anyone with a Bedlington terrier and they walked through the town to a place they could all gather.

Don't know if it still happens but I will have a search.:).

My memory says it maded the TV once but I think that was to do with some 'celebrity' (hate that word) who was doing a tour around Northumberland (and possibly further afield) and they stopped off in Bedlington on the day of the annual bedlington Terrier event. I could be wrong but I thing it was Larry Lamb who played Mick in the Gavin & Stacey show.

Looking at that tea-pot, the terrier seems to have changed shape over the years. Did it not have it's lovely, cuddly, rounded back then! And .... what wouldn't I give to have a tea-pot like that at my 'afternoon teas' - surpassed only by Mrs Bucket's candlelight suppers!

    @Canny lass check out @John H Williams post from 2020 :-

    Hi David

This is Judi, Joyce's eldest daughter. I remember you, the dinner, which I believe I cooked and of course the cut glass, which she cherished. She retired, almost 30 years ago and moved to Gosforth, where she continued to be a regular gym goer and social butterfly. Sadly she passed this week at the age of 91. A celebration of life will be held in April.

As for the grey lady she was definitely a thing. I practically grew up at Hartford and have never seen so many tough men so rattled after one of her visits. I 'me't her once in the Dome room. She was sad, not malevolent. She was the rich daughter of the Hall's owner, who fell in love with a stable boy, and threw herself do her death when she was not allowed to marry him.

@Judi M the comment above from @David Cope was the last time he visited this group:(. If you select the members identity tag it shows you their profile giving details of when they last visited the group :-

Depending on what settings a member may have chose the best way to alert a member that you have mentioned them in a comment is by starting their member ID with an @ like I have done above with you and David or by selecting the Quote option at the end of a members comment.

    Hope that helps :)

Hei, My name is Thomas Carr Gray  and i was the last one to leave the toll cottage.

Welcome to the group @Thomas Carr Gray. Did you move from the toll cottage to Melrose Avenue like a lot of the families did or did you move further afield?

This is a link to the post that @Reedy posted in History Hollow in 2013 - BebsideFurnace 1940 - 1952 :-

  9. @Denice -I see I got the possible schools the McGlen's went to wrong - not Whitley or Westridge but St Bedes.

We keep an albm for each of the Bedlington schools under Histric Bedlingto in the gallery section of this group.

I have found a c1953 St Bedes class photo, originally thought to be c1949, with Billy McGlen in it. This is a direct link to the St bedes junir and Senior achol album :-

The photo is the last one in the album and Bill McGlen gets named in the updates to the photo names.

    Hello!

I stumbled on this site looking for information on people in my family tree as well. My Great grandmother i was Catherine “Kitty” McGlen born to Michael McGlen and Isabella Dowson.

    Welcome to the group @Denice.

Unfortunately I can't add any further info iro the McGlenn family. Although I remember the family name trying to remember anything about the kids I played with around my grannies (Beatty Road) in the 1950's dosen't bring back any memories:).  I lived at the oval and went to Barrington & bedlington Station schools where the familes from Beatty Road are would have gone to the Whitley Memorial junior school then probably Westridge senior school.

Sadly the member, Rigger, of this group who was looking into his family and had a connection wit the McGlen family died in early 2023.

If you input the name - McGlenn - into the search box at the top right of the menu screen you shold get all the comment's where the family name was mentioned.

Hi, thank you both for your help regarding my question, I would love to have copies of the original documents.  John Tait, I think was estranged from his wife Mary Jane (my 2x great grandmother) at the time as she is living in Shiny Row with some of the children, I can't find him in 1901 but it was after 1891 where they lived in Front Street, Bedlington schedule 162 that they separated, as I have a newspaper article where they went to court, he was accused of striking Mary Jane.  It's all very interesting so I would love to know who the other people are in the house with him, possibly not wife but one of the daughters and her son?

    Regards Margaret

@Margaret I Johnson as this site is visible to everyone online I would suggest that you ask the Admin ( @AndyMilnethe remove your email address from view.

If you want to contact a member with personal info, eg email address, then it is best to use the Messages, envelope at the top right of the screen so only the two people see the message.:)

The photo that Canny lass posted of the Market Place showing the entrance to the yard is probably the only one wee have seen with a full view of the building. There are other old photos showing the Market place area but not with a full view of the Rawlings buildings. The oldest photo of the area I have seen is one that was popsted on a Facebook group by @johndawsonjune1955 and he has the date as c1903. I have put that photo, one without a date  and the 1910 map extract and photo Canny lass posted together :-

  13. @Canny lass I had two cups of tea and 2 Ringtons ginger snaps:).

Brilliant work and explanantion - thanks CL

I can't post all the above on one post on the Facebook comment/question that 'MarknMargaret Johnson' raised so I will give them a direct link to this topic.

My memory is saying the margaret joined this grouop not so long ago. I checked the 'Margaret' names and there is a @Margaret I Johnson so this will 'Tag' her.

The Market Place 'dwellings' didn't have numbers in the 1911 census. Could Mark & Margaret be confusing the schedule number with a house number? Ask if her relative's surname started with the letter T? If so I can probably pin-point the right house for her.

I have asked the question, on Wednesday, but still no response :ball:

  15. @Canny lass amogst all your research have you any info on the houes/flat numberng in the Market Place?

On the Bedlington Remembered Facebook group a member asked :-

I had a Google of the shops that are there now and checked the addresses but the last shop in that area, Market Cafe, is given as No 20A :-

     MarketPlacenumbers.thumb.jpg.e00ce82e24faa986acee9170432e7b75.jpg

I had a check on a 1896 map and as expected the Market Place is not filled with buildings that would not have been present when we were runing around there in the 1960s :-

    1896.thumb.jpg.a42b73bfc015bc3a5ccfc058b3fc4b94.jpg

I'm guessing that many of the old buildings in that row house multiple families in the early 20c and I suppose it's possible the building were renumbered when the families in 'multiple family' dwellings were rehoused.

@James - now in the late 1950's and early 60's from Bedlington's railway station 3rd Class is something I have no recollection of. I can only remember 1st and 2nd Class and we could not afford 1st so always went 2nd:) along with everyone we knew.

    St Andrews Cambois.jpg

    St Peters West Sleekburn.JPG

@Canny lass & @AvrilG I have been checking out how many churches there was in Cambois and there were two - St Andrews and the Methodist (seaside) Chapel.

St Andrews still exists and your first image is St Andrews. I went around the building via Google street view and there is no grave stones etc to be seen.

The Methodist chapel, according to the members on the Camboios Facebook group burn't down at the start of the 1970's and there does not appear to be a graveyard in existance.

The second photo above i recognised as it is the old Methodist Church in West Sleekburn that is now a private 'house'.

It used to be St Peters
