John runs a Facebook group - Sixtownships History group - where he posts info daily.

There was a site called http://shop.sixtmedia.org.uk/ where John also had many stories from Bedlington and surrounding towns. That site was used to promote and sell media covering the 'sixtownships' . I've just attempted to go to that site, via Google, but the site wasn't found. Don't no if this is temporarily not available or the site has been discontinued.

Their entries are amongst the Netherton Steets and Rows.  Is it possible East Row was there in Netherton area? I have no more clues.

Never seen it named on the old maps of Netherton Colliery. After the Rows were demolished the terraces that replaced them were First, Second, Plessey & Third Street.

sorry meant to say East Row

Houses with cardinal points in their name, that I can remember are :-

Bedlington Station - pit rows - South Row, North Row (& Shop Row)

surrounding area = West View, North View, East View & East Crescent

Top End - only know of New South Row (Dr Pit area)

    Stakeford = East View

West Sleekburn = South Row & North Row

Checked some of the old maps and can't find any more:unsure:

  4. @Rigger Can't think of an East Street in Bedlington. There is an East View, Bedlington Station = terraced row on the A1147 west of Grange Park estate .

Was Front Street East ever referred to as east Street?

Alan, thank you for the Woodhorn link.  Sadly (!) it is a holiday and I won't be able to do any real research, I just want to visit a few places to try and get a feel for the geographical origins of my forebears.

    Martin

If you find out any area or street names Martin there are some old photos, early and mid 20th century, around that the members have posted on this site and the Bedlington Facebook groups that might interest you.

  6. @Newbedders - I'm not a member of the National Library of Scotland or the Old Maps site and I get different results each time I visit the sites. The NLS has so many different options so I had a look at the different years displayed on the

https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/427570/581434/10/100708 site and  non of the buildings - Stoker's - Pringle's - Foster's - Fenwick's or Rutter's appear on the maps pre 1922. Stokers Buildings I could only find on the 1922 & 1924 maps. On the 1937 map Stoker's Buildings are not identified but Fenwick's Buildings appear near to where Stoker's  buildings were

  7. @Joan Eadington - started a topic in the 'Discussion' section rather than discuss in the Gallery section.

I only know of Stokers Buildings and Stokers Yard in Bedlington.

There are currently properties for sale with the postcode - NE62 5SE = Choppington = Stokers Buildings but I don't know if these houses are built where the old Stokers Buildings of Choppington would have been sited.:(

Hello, I am visiting Bedlington next month, and I'd like to soak up the atmosphere of where Robert Smith Watson, my 3x great grandfather, and his father and grandfather were born.  I would welcome any suggestions as to where I should go.  St Cuthbert's church seems a good place to start.  Other family names include Gray, Ogle, Robson and Gilhespy.  By 1851 Robert Smith Watson was an apprentice butcher in Bishopwearmouth.

    Thanks in hope, Martin

I have never researched my family and therefore never used St Cuthberts archives so wouldn't be able to advise you on who to contact initially to ensure you can get access to the records during the time you would be in the area. I would assume you already have a contact within the church:).

There is the 'Woodhorn  Museum & Northumberland Archives' site, approximately 7 miles from Bedlington, that I know when researching their ancestors, and the history of the area, many people use.

It would be worth your while contacting them before you travel :- http://www.experiencewoodhorn.com/

More or less! But, it's taking a bit longer for the 17 males with whom I watched the match! Seeing grown men cry is a terrible thing.

Double or Quits - I'll say England to win the World cup - that should balance the books:thumbsup:

    Are you sober yet?

There is a slight possibility England might beat Croatia and then a more likely result  will be  getting hammered in the final - Belgium or France:wave:.

England's journey in the world cup :-

England ranked 12th by FIFA -

    Tunisia ranked 21st. -

    Panamar ranked 55th -

    Belgium, 1st team ranked 3rd - there 2nd team beat our mixed 1st & 2nd team.

    Columbia ranked 16th - penalties

    Sweden ranked 24th.

Next opponents - Croatia ranked 20th (who went to penalties to beat Russia ranked 70th).

If we get through the semi final then Belgium, ranked 3rd, or France ranked 7th.

I know there are always games that go the underdogs way but I think England, if they stick with the same starting 11 as they did last match, will now be defending more than anything else. Unless they substitute Jordan Henderson (defensive midfield), Dele Alli (attacking [supposedly] midfield) & Raheem Stirling (attacking midfield) with a defensive midfielder that pick out a forward with a pass, and two attacking midfielders that an actually get passed the opposition, with the ball!

    - Who the H3ll picked that strip for the Swedish goalkeeper! He looks like a bad day in the Findus frozen pea factory!

    - That must be good, substantial, British kniker elastic in the Swiss team's shorts!

    Champagne on ice and waiting.

Well I'm with you ♀️ and I don't like the ball, or the hair cuts, either:punk:.

I think the Swiss keeper's 40 denier tights are way to evocative.:)

    I hope it doesn't go to penalties:dribble:

  12. The above, found whilst 'Silver Surfing' by Billy Embleton, has been posted on the Bedlington remembered Facebook group.

We don't have any info other that what is printed on the document.

    Just to ensure that if anyone uses the 'Search' facility looking for info that this document may hold here are some phrases from the document ;

Mary Ann Short - Golden Wedding 1851 - 1901  & .... we cannot refrain from mentioning your gallan effort in trying to rescue two hundred and four brothers entombed in the Hartley pit and it ministers to our pride to feel that "John Short" is written on the scroll of heros..........................

    ---------------------------------

I did have a Google of the Hartley pit disaster but I can't find any reference, from that Google, of John and Mary Short.
