Bedlington Welcomes Lidl
The tills were ringing yesterday as Lidl opened their brand new store in Bedlington to mixed but mostly positive reactions. The development provoked protests in May last year when a willow tree much loved by a group of residents was felled. Traffic disruption during the build also caused local residents to voice their anger across social media. The new store is now open however, and employing up to 40 locals. Speaking on Facebook, local resident Marjorie Glass said, "Impressive. It was full of shoppers yesterday, in the midst of that nasty weather. Hope it's very successful and brings folks into Bedlington." Lidl employee Donna Clark, after her shift said, "Can honestly say, after a 10 hour shift, I'm worn out! It's nice to know it's all been worth it and people are happy with the store and the efforts of all the staff today" Others were optimistic but had reservations. Olive Maddigan said, "Just hope we don't lose morrisons as Lidl is great but some things in Morrisons are great too". A new mini-roundabout was recently installed at the junction with Schalksmuhle Road with the aim of reducing congestion caused by the expected increase in traffic to the store and surrounding area. It is hoped that with this new development and other proposals like it residents will be encouraged to shop within the town centre instead of travelling to supermarkets elsewhere. Local media group DW-Media posted a short video of the new store to YouTube which will form part of their Bedlington development series.

It was my understanding that the owners of the News Post Leader were in financial trouble so it's certainly possible I suspect it is simply more to do with an upcoming election?

Barrington Arms Still Trading?
Thanks. I'll add them to the directory but flag it for review. Incidentally there are far more businesses on the Front Street than I had imagined.

Town Centre Development Plans Available To View Online
One thing I am concerned with is the upkeep of the cut between the Market Tavern and the old Johnson's shoe shop (Now Fireplaces). To draw people through it needs to be inviting. Hopefully a positive development here will help raise the standards of surrounding areas.

Town Centre Development Plans Available To View Online
I also like it. I think it's a good move for the town and a good mix of uses so as not to bet everything on one sector. It seems like some of the units could quite easily change use if required.

Residents asked to name Town Centre Development
Following the submission of a Planning permission application for the Bedlington town centre re-development, residents are being asked to vote on a new name for the area. A pre-determined list gives the voter four choices; "The Forge", "Piper's Place", "The Cross" or "Market Square". The names are said to have been chosen taking into account the character and history of the area, looking to the future and with the aim of providing a strong and appealing name for occupiers and customers. The investinbedlington.co.uk website states that the aim of the development is to "create a vibrant new town centre for Bedlington, but also contribute to the economic growth of the town, by creating 180 permanent new jobs, 33 construction jobs, and injecting at least £1m into the local economy." Votes can be cast at http://www.investinginbedlington.co.uk/Vote A link to the planning application itself will be posted here once available.

#2 Read/Unread Content When you are logged in, the website will automatically keep track of read and unread content and display it to you in different ways depending on the status. Links to content that you have not read will show with bold titles and include an unread marker like so... The first topic here is unread and the second is read. Clicking/tapping the circle on the left of the title will take you to the first unread post so you can pick up the conversation from where you left off. Clicking the title will take you to the first post in the topic in case you need to refresh your memory. When viewing the topic a blue horizontal marker will indicate where the old read content finishes and the unread content starts. If the blue circle is replaced by a star it also means you have previously posted in the topic. In the example below I have posted in both topics but the bold title and highlighted star indicate there is unread content. You can see an overview of all of your unread content using the filters on the home page...
