  1. The dualling of the A1 in my opinion is something that is long overdue, when I travel up to Alnwick I always get stuck behind a tractor and a few cars behind it just after Morpeth going at 30mph.

One way the county council could do it is by not poring millions into Ashington and invest it on something that will benefit the whole county.

Need they be reminded they are Northumberland County Council, not Ashington District Council!

  2. To what end? Would it not be better actually putting some time into resolving current issues not ones 30 years in the past?

To be Honest Fourgee if that view was taken with everything, would Hillsbough have been investigated, the child abuse scandal involving major celebrities, the Iraq Inquiry, Phone Hacking, etc.

I understand these issues I have named are all ones that people died as a result in most of them but they also destroyed people lives too.

But what people seem to forget is the Miners strike destroyed peoples lives also, People were put of the bread line, had there futures destroyed by being Blacklisted by the Coal Board, and even in some could not live with what they had done like of going back to work during the strike.

Every time I think of the people who had there lives destroyed during the strike I think of the film Brassed off which gives a real incite into the lives of Miners during and just after the strike, This scene best describes the feelings and conditions of some:

After this scene is done the character goes to the colliery which has just closed and he lost his job at and tries to hang himself, sadly this was true in some cases.

If an Inquiry was done on the miners strike, it would mean closure of the matter for several people who knew the government lied to them, who knew the NUM's tactics where not right and who were not believed till only last year that it was a plan all along.

  3. Seems Mr Lavery does not know the plans were Scrapped, not shelved.

Best thing Tesco's could do is say Sorry to the people of Bedlington for the false promises and hand back the assets in good condition like the Car Park, gap site, Public Toilets and the retail units as they got them in 2009.

  4. Hang on Adam..............

    £30m town centre regeneration...........no £74M!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Also...

The shop restorations money earmarked from Wansbeck.

The market place renewal Money from Wansbeck.

Actually most of it came from Heritage Lottery funding through the Townscape Heritage Initiatives.

Look at the bottom Malcolm £30 million town centre regeneration scheme.

    http://www.archnorthumberland.co.uk/about-arch/development/

However you are also right with £74 million.

    http://www.archnorthumberland.co.uk/whats-happening-in-ashington-0/

So I would say it is two separate bits so now the figures have changed a little bit.

£156 Million spent on Ashington by the county council.

Then add the private investment of:

    £106 million

Sum total: £262 million pounds spent on Ashington Since 2009.

I forgot the THI Money was spent on both the shops and market place, but that then reinforces the argument with more spent everywhere else but nothing for Bedlington.

  5. So how much is it now for Ashington?

    £20 million Leisure.

    £30m town centre regeneration

and now £32 million on a new county hall

So that is a minimum of £82 Million spent on Ashington by the county council alone.

The add the Private sector into it all as well

    New Plant Factory £100 Million

    New Bernicia HQ £6 Million

So all together in the last 5 years since the end of Wansbeck District Council ,Ashington has had a minimum of:

    £188 Million Spent on it!

    Bedlington mean while.

£150,000 from the county for a community centre they closed, the money was from the golf course sell off that Wansbeck did.

and that is all bedlington has had off Northumberland County Council!

The shop restorations money earmarked from Wansbeck.

The market place renewal Money from Wansbeck.

  6. Not a photo, but a video - day the powerstation came down. Sad day me thinks, whether by plane or by land, you knew you were almost home when you saw the chimneys.. I may have some other footage from a little while before taken from the air - but those I'll have to hunt out.. And yeah, I know, I should have gotten a tripod - but cameras were pricey back then!

    http://timerider.co.uk/download/power.mpg

Feel free to take a copy, someone somewhere should be keeping an archive of such things.

I remember well, I was standing on the other side of the river on the old Bates Colliery site when the chimneys were bought down, the operation was massive police blocking all the roads to the power station, a police helicopter doing a fly past to see if anyone was in the area, fire and rescue on site to dampen down the dust for the chimneys, was a sad day to see them go from the skyline like it will be when Alcan's go and then in time the power stations.

I heard a rumour when they were blowing the chimneys, the third or forth one fell on top of an empty fire engine because the explosion went wrong anyone know if that was true?
