Staith Quay, Bank Top, Bedlington Station
Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) replied to Peter Turner's topic in History Hollow
@Peter Turner - I know you will have done loads of research and often have to wade through lots of info you already know. Although later than the period you have been looking at did you notice the comment by Reedy in the Puddler's Raa[Row] topic where his dad said about Howard Terrace becoming Glassey terrace? Reedy Posted May 30, 2013 Starting at what used to be Joe Jennings farm and shop including Mansion House now possibly 'Smiles' was Glassey Terrace. The first 7 houses were originally named Howard Terrace but the name was changed to Glassey Terrace as a result of misdirected mail as another Howard Terrace existed in Netherton. Families living in Glassey Tce in the 1940s/1950s were - 1 - Storey, 2 - Jobson, 3 - Storey, 4 - Watson, 5 - Tait, 6 -----, 7 - Hedley, 8 - Moscrop, 9 - Proudlock, 10 - Hedley, 11 - Andrews, 12 - Brown, 13 - Gregg, 14 - Morton, 15 - Gibson, 16 - Wonford -

@Lars Dahlberg - bit of info/gossip on the breeding of Bedlington Terriers, in Bedlington back in the 1950s.
-
@Canny lass - have you any hints, tips or clues for this couple?
-
Good morning @Lars Dahlberg ,Jennifer & Nova. Hopefully the members will be able to give your suggestions of where best to spend any time in the area. I would hope someone could come up with some ideas but I don't believe there is any official 'Information Center' where you could visit and find out the History of Bedlington and the Bedlington Terrier. I hope I am wrong and someone will give you better info. I think what you might get is a few comments from the members of this site based on what info has been handed down to them eg :- The Bedlington terrier originally hails from the North-East of England in a town called Rothbury on the Scottish/English borders of Northumberland. In fact, the breed is still sometimes known as the Rothbury Terrier - see http://www.dog-breeds-expert.com/Bedlington-Terrier.html One online site to visit about local mining is http://www.experiencewoodhorn.com/ . Woodhorn is approximately 7 miles from Bedlington and is a former 19th-century coal mine now a museum and heritage centre for art and local historic relics. Address: QEII Country Park, Ashington NE63 9YF I'm trying hard not to just simply type - there's not a lot to see or find out! If you were interested in attempting to understand the 'pitmatic' dialect then read some of the stories on this site by @HIGH PIT WILMA. HPW (or Bill). HPW worked in the Bedlington mine in the 60s but ended up in one of the last mines in the area, Bates Colliery (approximately 5 miles outside Bedlington) and created a 'blog' (for the want of a better word) on the Flickr community web site and shared his photos and stories on that site. He has since arranged for his photos and stories to be added to this site and they can be found in the Gallery > Places Gallery > Bates Pit by High Pit Wilma Link to his album is

@John Fox (foxy) - your tag hadn't worked John - but just done this one back to you and it appears to have worked = it's turned blue on my screen.

Can't say I've stumbled across 'Staithes Quay' but I've never delved into any of the census. It seems to contradict itself - Staithes Quay & Bank Top but never seen anything to say what the full extent of he the 'Bank Top area' was. There is an 'Old Staith', on the Bedlington side of the river, marked on the old 1922 map. The only photos I have seen of the 'Old Staith' area are the ones of the railway bridge. There are some properties on the left as you look under the bridge but never seen them identified anywhere :- The wooden railway bridge was replaced in 1929.

@Peter Turner - never seen a photo of Puddlers Row on this site, or the Facebook group sites for Bedlington. I would assume that in your research you will have found the name Puddlers Row on the old maps eg. 1921 (published 1924) http://maps.nls.uk/view/102346626 & 1938 (published 1947) http://maps.nls.uk/view/101028540 I have no proof of this but I am sure I have read, somewhere, that the piece of grassed land that's in front of the Tomlea Avenue cottages is where Puddlers Row was sited.

Councillor Wallace - Accentuate the Positive!
Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) replied to Russ Wallace's topic in Talk of the Town
Shared today on Facebook group Bygone Bedlington :- Russ Wallace Yesterday at 09:56 In response to requests (yes, really!), Radio Northumberland are re-broadcasting the first ‘Bedlington Show.’ The response so far way beyond expectation! The show highlights the good things about our town and the people behind them by asking about their favourite music – and why. So if you want to learn about Brent from La Torre or Lynne from The Chiropody and Podiatry Studio’s choice in music – or which civic dignitary picked “Funkin’ for Jamaica” as their favourite song – listen in! The re-run will be on air at the normal times, starting Thursday 13 July: Thursday @ 7.00 pm - Friday @ 5.00 pm - Saturday @ 3.00 pm - Sunday @9.00 am Monday @ 10.00 am - Tuesday @ 7.00 pm - Wednesday @10.00 am Radio Northumberland can be found at www.RadioNorthumberland.comAt the bottom of the page there are a number of carriers where you can click and listen. Thanks for your support. Russ http://www.radionorthumberland.com/ -

Struggled with me left & right so added numbers and just a couple of names. No 11 (or 3 ) is my granda, the coach - Robert Coe Story says Janet Henderson of Facebook - sixtownshps group. As it is bedlington Station Welfare then the houses, top right corner as you view the photo, must be Queens Road (surely not Tanglewood Cottage).

@Canny lass - How about c1968. Check out this Flickr link that has many Netherton Colliery photos by Billy Embleton - most you will have seen before. In this Flickr collection are some extracts from Steven B Martin's publication of Netherton (Nedderton) published by Evan S B Martin :- http://flickriver.com/places/United+Kingdom/England/Netherton+Colliery/search/ -
@Canny lass - I don't have a note of where the old 'sepia' aerial photo originated from but in a quick search on this site I found this topic where @tomtom posted a colour aerial photo of the colliery houses. I will have a bit Google search, and dig into sites, see what I can find.

Not sure of their ages Foxy - apart from Kingsley Wake, Ronnie Phillipson and possibly Wallace & Gromit As you look at the photo - right hand side, back row, the bloke, two in with the dark tie, is bugging me and I feel is if I should know his name - @Ovalteeny -has he been involved with Bedlington football teams for years?

Do we know what the results of this battle were? -
On the quoits photo the John Temple is the young lad in my family photo after he he married and left Coquetdale (late 60s I think) I can't remember the estate he moved to but I do know he drank in the Sun and played quoits for them, as did his Uncle Harry (Jim's brother). That's why I always thought it would have been the Dr Pit Welfare park. This is a photo posted by Janet Henderson on the sixtownships group site with the comment :- Bedlington Terriers Football club. My Grandad ,Robert Coe Storey, who is on the back row, 3rd from the right, coached the Bedlington Terrier juniors, not sure what year. The club house looks very similar to the one in the quoits photo and there are houses in the background but can't be sure what estate it is!! Where did Bedlington terriers play?
-
@kalee this is the norm to drift off the original topic but I will get back to it - if I can find the positive info! @HIGH PIT WILMA - The Jim Temple that lived at 4 Coquetdale I do remember as an amateur Radio Ham as came and fitted some type of filter to our TV to prevent interference from his setup. I seem to remember an outdoor aerial that was twice the height of our houses. I don't know how many brothers Jim had but , only that one of his brothers was Harry (the one in the quoits photo) who had a son, Harry, that I knew and I think Harry junior would have been born 1946 to 47 and he went to Westridge. A younger son in that family was Alan Temple that is in the Westridge 5 photo Symtoms posted of their class at Ford Castle. This is a photo of the three families - Nos 3 Lally), 4 (Temple - Jim, Sadie, Sheila, John (in the quoits photo) & Jennifer) & 5 (my clan - Edgar) - at Cambois Beach c 1955

Nearl forgot - this is the photo that has done the rounds on Facebook Bedlington groups and it has only ever been tagged as the Opening of the quoits bay at the Welfare Park so never knew if it was Dr Pit or Bedlington Station. Looking more closely at the building I would have thought this was the Dr Pit Welfare Park, what do you think @HIGH PIT WILMA?
