  7. Absolutely, even then it was well into the summer before it really dried out. I can remember talking to the contractor who was doing the groundworks when they were building the new houses below the heaps, on the land just over the railway lines. They were having a hell of a job getting the place drained. The old clay field drains were full of crap from the heap.
  8. While I was at college in the mid '70's (Kirkley Hall) I used to milk the cows at weekends for the Coatsworth family at Sleeburn cottage farm for extra money. We used to find allsorts in the feilds towards the old pit. The burn used to turn some funny colours as well. The cows would often have foot problems from sharp objects coming to the surface. The drainage was terrible on both sides of the road. The fields on the opposite side suffered run off from the heap. The only time that I remember that farm being completely dry for any legnth of time was in 1976. That farm is of course now the livery stables
  9. Exactly ..... who put that in Scunthorpe ?
  10. Answer to question 2 should read Mt Rushmore (not McKinley)

  12. Well, I called in today at 12 o'clock. The wife and I wandered around for 10 mins or so then left. Why did we not buy anything ? Not only were we the only customers, we were the only ones in there. There was not one single stall manned, not even the snack counter. We whent across the road to the butchers (we were in there for a while because the wife can talk a glass eye to sleep). After leaving the butchers I whent back across to the market, still no-one manning their stalls, that was 12:45, so again I got what I wanted at Sonias. I did pick up a copy of the market survey to fill in but to be honest I don't think there is even any point in filling it in. When I looked in after leaving the butchers there were some customers leaving (via Keenlysides shop) and I overheard one of them saying that, that was a complete waste of time . Frankly, I agree.

  15. see you there Brian..... jet lag permitting ha ha
  16. You say it isn't actually like that, but the fact is, it was like that and I am not the only Station resident to have that view, many of whom I have spoken to have said the same. A market (indoors or outdoors) should be upbeat, the stall holders should be giving the punters a lift not sending them out the door tripping over their bottom lip en-route to Boots for some vallium. I am a great supporter of having something like this at the Station, but for gods sake lets have some enthusiasm about the place or the next thing you know we will be bleating on about yet another empty building in Bedlington Station, and that, I am sure you would agree, is the very last thing that anyone wants. May well take you up on your offer of a cuppa and a chat though.
  17. It would help if some of the stall holders would slap a smile on their faces. I have been in a few times when it was quiet and I have to say it was depressing, the stall holders were just standing around looking morbid, not even talking to each other. That sort of atmosphere is infective and to be honest I could not wait to get out, empty handed at that and I whent round to Sonias and got what I wanted there.Never mind putting more stalls on, they need to lighten up and make people feel more welcome or lose potential customers.
  18. HaHA , dunno what happened there , one was a spare and it slipped through Malcolm.

  20. When I first posted that, Eliots Garage was selling new Cortina's (only joking) It will be interesting to see what John comes up with.
  21. Ha ,I think getting a booking may well be a little difficult, being open could well have it's advantages... ooops
  22. Not only did she destroy the mining industry Adam, she hacked the Dairy farmers to peices as well. When she took away the free milk from the schools , that hit dairy farmers really hard. Then there was the dairy farming opt out sheme (this was also abused by farmers) Farmers would be paid to leave the industry, this was aimed at small dairy herds, but for many with herds of 300 cows and above it was too a chance to miss out on. They were paid £1,000/cow OVER what it sold for. The cows had to go to slaughter and the farmer could not go back into milk production for 10 years. A large farming company that I worked for whent out of dairying under that scheme getting rid of ....... 5,500 milking cows. Many farmers went back into production after 10 years out. Then in the 1980's she was instrumental in the introduction of milk Quotas throughout the EEC. that was the nail in the coffin for many milk producers. British farmers , it seemed, were the only ones forced to stick to the rules, they were superlevied if they whent over quota (as a country, rather than an individual). Then she set the wheels in motion to get rid of the Milk Marketing Board as it was a monopoly. Dozens of dairy farmers are still leaving the industry every week. There are a few very large herds 7000 cows and more springing up in varous parts of the country and this alone has proven that the quota system has backfired as the owners of these large herds ( often a consortium) are buying up quotas from all over the place (including europe) That woman took away Britains ability to be self sufficient , Coal, Steel, Agriculture and associated industries.
  23. Be off with you scoundrel, I do not tollerate beggars.
