On a similar thread, can anyone remember seeing Mud at the Regal in Ashington. They played a charity / fund raising gig poss around '73 0r '74. Les Gray kept mentioning Accrington, he was obviously lost (or chemically confused)

Was the tall guy in the suit at the back called Wilf,? I think he was the manager for a few years. Those pics are a little early for me, tried to get in a few times but couldn't, I wouldn't have been 18 till Dec '73, I was one of those who always looked young (still am). Me and a mate had been refused entry one night and we were stood in the shelter opposite the Clayton when a Transit van pulled up and the driver asked how to get to the stage door, we started to tell him when he told us to jump in. We showed him round and the group invited us in, the bouncers were livid cos we got one over them, the band was Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.

Typically Tropical were the group Brian. Them Gibbon cousins of yours certainly led you astray, no wonder you did a bunk to Oz. Freds wife , Brenda was at ours earlier tonight . You had to be drunk before you whent there, cos you couldnt get hammered on the beer in there. I used to drink the Watney's Red Barrell in there, usually a good pint but sadly not in the Domino, it was as flat as a Japs face, but, what the hell, nobody cared.

Twas them, Foxy. Clarence Cooper would often hire the place for his various do's as well. There were obvious connections between the Noble Organisation and Coopers. I remember him hiring Bobby Thompson for one of his "do's" and Rue and the Rockets provided the music , another connection to show folk (Ruben Slater of the famous show family)

Sun Inn Bedlington Murder Artefacts For Sale
Keith Scantlebury replied to johndawsonjune1955's topic in History Hollow
Foxy, I also fully understand where you are coming from as well. Displayed in the right way these items of the Sun Inn murders could be viewed as part of a memorial to those who were killed, rather than turning the tragedy into a macabre gimmick. -
Sun Inn Bedlington Murder Artefacts For Sale
Keith Scantlebury replied to johndawsonjune1955's topic in History Hollow
I'm not totally against displaying them in the Sun Inn, there are many pubs, hotels and coaching inns up and down the country that benefit from their murky pasts. You are right in saying the infamous Sun Inn murders / murderers should not be forgotten and they are part of Bedlingtons long history. These artefacts should remain in Bedlington and be displayed as a reminder of the tragic events of that day almost 100 years ago. Merc your suggestion of having a collection to keep them here is not a bad one at all, why dont we see if we, as a community, can raise the money to buy these perhaps John could shed a bit of light on how much would be required to purchase these then it can be decided on how best to display them. A display similar to the Dirty Bottles in Alnwick could be possible (if suitably secure). May be we could display them in Bedlingtons very own Sports and Community Centre !!! (AHEM) -
I might just make an effort and go to see this. I know of one or two people who have seen the exhibition down south and have found it absolutely fascinating. One of the things that someone told me was the realisation that when he was looking around, that it was really not that very long ago, and of course for some people, it is still in living memory.

I think it would be a bit macabre, but on the other hand I would like to see them kept in Bedlington. Do Northumbria Police not have a museum of some sorts? maybe they could be approached -
We have it every day

Clippie Shop At Choppington Station
Keith Scantlebury replied to Barton Lad's topic in History Hollow
Yeah and brokens clothes pegs were never chucked out (the dolly type) they were used as proggies. Also , as you say the proggy mats were used as blankets but then they were relegated to the floor later as new ones were made. If it is any consolation ,Canny Lass, I was also flat chested as teenager..............not so much now !! -
His act when he won new faces started with him doing a Frank Spencer gag , leaning into a pram with his back to the audience, the real joke (which he meant) was when he turned around and the audience saw he was black. Now it was ok for him to take the pxxs out of himself to get the audience and the judging panel on his side to win the competition. He can belittle himself for being black as long as the white man do's not join in 'cos then it is racism. Paul Sinna (from the chase) is also a "comedian", he got the lip on 'cos Jim Davison called him " that Indian puff" even though he IS gay and an of Indian decent. Yet complaints that Paul Sinna caused distress to a lady in the audience by branding all Swedish ladies to be porn stars, fell on deaf ears . I have said this before on here and will say it again, racism is only when the whites make derogatory remarks to "colourds" , NEVER the other way round. White English calling white people from other countries is NOT racist but aim it at a black fella from those countries .......?

Who Remembers Pig Killing Day
Keith Scantlebury replied to johndawsonjune1955's topic in History Hollow
My dad was a slaughterman / butcher at the market place. I know he would kill pigs for those who had them at their homes or allotments. The one thing he was often asked to do was " just cut the throat Jack and let it run" he would always refuse. Apart from it being downright cruel it was a waste of black pudding. Also if any of you got your xmas turkey from Jimmy Mole it would have been my dad who killed and dressed it. Jimmy Mole lived at the Top end of Pioneer Tce, he had a shed and the field behind the miners cottages where Waverley Court is now -
Who Remembers Pig Killing Day
Keith Scantlebury replied to johndawsonjune1955's topic in History Hollow
My mothers side of the family farmed at Ulgham Manor (the farm that was behind the church). We were told many stories about the killings. There was a limit on what could be killed for personal use but I think they were allowed extra because they employed refugees (and POW's for that matter). They always had pig, sheep and cattle carcases hanging and just like anyone else they would try their luck and "do one or two more". One day someone gave them a shout that the man from the ministry was on his way (he would be doing a spot check to make sure they had not exceeded their limit), so they got some refugees to hide half the carcases. They were left whith (eg) 2 sides of each hanging (2 beef 2 pork 2 lamb / mutton ). When the inspector looked at them he marked them down as killed 2 pigs, 2 beast and 2 sheep. Why?, because the refugees had hidden all the right hand sides of the carcases so when the inspector looked and saw 2 left sides of each he just doubled his numbers. Apparently nothing much was said about it as the man from the ministry had an "extra large" parcel of meat for his trouble . -
He was brilliant with kids, he used to call into Beadnells paper shop at the Oval to get a handfull of lollies before sugery to give to the kids he would see that day. I remember going to him at the Guide Post clinic for my very first HGV medical. Although he had not been my Dr. for many years he remembered me and we spent some time talking about the family etc. The medical, he asked "what colour is that red pen?" I said "blue". and that was it , passed. His fee "Oh just buy me a cup of tea sometime "

Richard Branston has come out and said that there are no plans for Virgin Money to buy the re-naming rights to the stadium. They are sticking with the shirt sponsorship for the time being.

Has anybody else noticed that the pundits on MOTD and Football Focus, as well as comentators and (some) newspaper columnists are still referring to Newcastle Utd's ground as St James' park ?
