  1. I don't think it was a mistake.

I stopped drinking in the Grapes because, quite frankly, coarse language seemed to be expected of you! I have found the Sun to be the same, although have not been there for a while. The Black Bull I can't comment on, the Tavern these days is rife with it, the Blue Bell seems to have always been a place to take your mouth before washing it out and the Wharton has its fair share, too. I drink regularly in the Red Lion now and, despite Wetherspoons policy and promises, it is far from unusual to hear fould and offensive language as a matter of course. It's not necessary, not clever, and not funny.

The mistake was He/She said "most of the drinking fraternity" There are decent people in the town using the public houses that have been insulted by this comment and I would'nt say they were in the minority. If He/She has a problem in their pub they need to ask themselves what they are going to do about it rather than moan about it on a world wide website, and giving the town a bad name.

  2. Have you as landlord tried politely asking the drinking fraternity in your pub to "tone it down" a bit? I remember in the 80's a pub just outside of Bedlington where swearing was frowned upon by the ownwers. When they heard anyone swearing - the coarser words - they were politely asked to "tone it down a bit for the sake of the other customers" or because "there are ladies present". Most often it worked but should the owner need to repeat his polite request to "tone it down a bit", the offender was pointed in the direction of a "swear box" on the corner of the bar and invited to deposit a donation to St. Oswald's Hospice or leave the pub. There was always a pleasant atmosphere and St. Oswalds got the occasional TV.

    Just a suggestion.

I used to drink in the Half Moon as well. :icecream: :icecream:

  3. It seems that most of the drinking fraternity here in Bedlington find it somehow necessary to swear at every given opportunity, and yes that includes the women.

The above comment was your mistake, foul and abusive language is not used by "most of the drinking fraterity in Bedlington" I can't comment on the Black Bull but do frequent other pubs in the town where there is'nt a problem, the management would not tolerate it anyway. Do You?

  4. Any new found wealth that the council receive from parking fines should be "Ring Fenced" and used to make a Compulsory Purchase of the former Elliots Garage Site. If any council house tennant allowed their garden to get into the state that this place has been left in,untouched for the last 5 weeks, they would be evicted. The local councillors need to act quick though, because the last time we had money I beleive it was from the sale of the Golf Club and it was nicked from under our noses by our neighbours who shall remain nameless,...........But it begins with an "A"

  5. I agree with you Foxy 100% it,s a clip but its under development and the progress I meant was at least something was happening unlike the old school now theres an eyesore............. the powers that be are ratteling on about the "rejuvinated front street" and how nice its going to be I can only imagine they walk sideways up the street like crabs facing in the opposite direction from the school..........just a thought lol

Looks like were thinking on the same wavelength Cyril, but there are still tickets left for the "Guess the Year of Removal" competition, Why not try your luck? First prize is a Gallon of Diesel and the lucky runner up will receive a Hot Pasty from Greggs. :icecream:

  6. I agree it was an eyesore but at least its making progress and regardless of what it turns out to be it will be a lot better than it was lying unused.......... but the Old School I think its about time that was it either pulled down or the owners were made to get it sorted out, I cringe EVERYTIME I pass it as I do when I see those bloody solar panels on that roof in the market place what on earth possesed the council to agree to them......whats next a wind turbine farm on top of the wood heed ?

There's been no progress for three weeks now Cyril, we've still got the pile of rubbish in the Town Centre. It will look a lot better by mid August after we've had rain and its covered with lush green weeds. Neither Ladbrokes or Charlie Chisolm are taking bets on a removal date,so maybe the members on this forum should run a "Guess The Year for Removal" competition among ourselves.

  7. Is this the same 'conservation area' as the church hall 2 doors down from there, as that has been dealt with so quickly and is not in any way an eyesore is it? :dribble:

Yes you got it in one, Unfortunately it is the same Conservation Area. If you care to look across the road from these 2 eyesores you cannot miss the third one which was manufactured by the company that promised to build a new Supermarket. The former

Spend n Save/Fancy That shop must come top of the Slum League. Tesco has not only turned this place into the sight that it is,they have also denied the Bedlington folk of a business that hasn't been replaced. Keep checking your emails I'm sure somebody from the council will get onto you with all the answers.

  8. Well BigTessi, that really is a brainteaser,

If you would like to pop along to the next council meeting Im sure your councillors, as always, will answer any questions or concerns that you may have. They may even respond through this website as some of them use it on a regular basis. In the interim period, you could pop into Ladbrooks and see what odds they are giving on whether, or when the pile of debris that has been left there will be removed, now that everything with any monetary value has gone .By the way, I'm sure things will come to an early conclusion as this eyesore is in the centre of the Conservation Area.

  9. By the way Pete,

Dont know if your up to speed with whats going on here regarding the Leisure Centre but Ashington is in line for a new one at a cost of £20 million when they already have one. Bedlington who has never had one will get nothing.

  10. Foxy,

I understand the point that you are making and fully agree but the reason that I mentioned the minning museum was because miners from Ashington and Bedlington would have used Hartford hall. As for putting them in front of a Leisure Centre, well I think that would be an insult to the past. If Bedlington can not have then then the minning museum seems the next best option or to use Malcom's words they will end up on a none existant road. Still, the problem of getting them from Chris topps Iron Works, heafty bill I would think,

    Pete,

I think you missed the point here,my suggestion of putting them at the new leisure centre was merely sarcasm aimed at the incompetent councillors that claim to represent us Bedlington folk. Of course I don't want the gates or anything else for that matter to go to Ashington but until we can get these people replaced we'll just have to weather the storm, hopefully better than the gates have.

  11. Reading your reply Malcom it would appear that the gates have to go back to Hartford Hall, but was this place not the NCB rehabilitation centre when the pits were working? It would be in the interest of Bedlington and the surrounding area for these gates to be located in Bedlington as part of its history or even in the minning museum as a tribute to the many miners that went through a reabiltation program owing to injury in the mines.

    Pete,

The problem we have with putting them in a Mining Museum is that the museum just happens to be located in Ashington. Unfortunately the people who preside over our beloved town have no interest in Bedlington and whenever there is any investment in the former Wansbeck District it will usually end up in Ashington.Youv'e probably just given them an idea now that will be put on the agenda for the next meeting. Perhaps they will look nice as the entrance to the new Leisure Centre, to be built in ASHINGTON after all the repair bill for the Gates will be a pittance added to the £20 million cost of the Centre.
