Sorry cannot agree with this one,
these "artefacts" should be destroyed.I don't want Bedlington to be remembered for murdering Policemen.

Must have been quite a lot of private houses nationalised too then - the ones that were busily fitting inside bathrooms post-war!
Truth is there was a steady and general improvement in conditions. But food rationing went on far far longer than it should have due the the post-war Labour government, and it wasn't until Churchill was returned to power in 1951 that the country got off its backside and we started to see real recovery. By 1958 Britain had "Never had it so good!" - including the miners! Most people around at the time realised this - except the Labour Party who were still fighting the class war, and amongst themselves. Wasn't until Harold Wilson that Labour started to come to its senses. But, he had one hell of a fight on his hands with the communists in the party, and still went on to plunge the country into another financial crisis. Sound familiar?
There were some short-term benefits from nationalisation, but it soon became a gravy train, and rendered Britain's Industries uncompetitive. The pit closures (and the modernisations) would have happened regardless, but they were more painful under nationalisation because they resulted from a "command economy", and were far less staggered than they would have been had simple competition been the deciding factor. Immediately post-war many Industries did need consolidating, and nationalisation did just that. But, it brought with it a whole raft of other problems.
And.. none of the above is from a book, or a second-hand opinion. I saw it with my own two eyes, and wasn't a member or supporter of any political party then.
Correct....

One program that I do remember from the fifties and I am not sure if it was on the commercial channels or BBC, was a program called The Grove family, one of the main characters was Granny Grove,do you or anyone remember this program?

I've just read in todays Journal that Tesco have applied for permission to convert a pub in Seaton Deleval into a Supermarket. The locals say the pub is well used by the local community for social pleasure as well as providing carry out meals, and don't want the plans to go ahead. Tesco say this is not the case and want the pub closed. I would urge the people of the town to lobby their local councillors to contact Northumberland Conty Council and ask them to ensure they do not make the same mistake twice by allowing Tesco to buy up property and then doing nothing with it and letting it slide into a derilect eyesore while they wait for an upturn in the market. This can be clearly viewed if you take a look at the properties either side of their shop in Bedlington Market Place . What the townsfolk need to do is come to Bedlington and take a look at the results of Tesco's broken promises.

Forgot to mention,
Hope the councillors that use this website take note, and are not sticking their heads up their own arses on this issue.

Handy hint for the Bedlington townsfolk...
If you can manage to get hold of a hard copy of the survey, drive a 6 inch nail into your toilet wall leaving approximately 4 inches protuding and within easy reach when sitting on the toilet. Cut the survey into 4 inch squares and hang them on the nail.Whenever you use the toilet, just use the desired amount of handy "wipes". This works out much cheaper than Andrex and hopefully prevents Ashington from getting £20 million Spent on something they already have and Bedlington has never had.

Yeah, but there are rumours dotting around about the take over of Northern Rock by Virgin Money and the possible naming rights of the stadium being linked with Virgin.
Suppose this would be unique, there's wasn't that many knocking around the Toon last Friday night.

Right then Keith and Brian I was part of the fittings there from 68 onwards and saw most of the top pop groups that appeared and have photos of some. How about a little quiz ? You get 1 point if you can name the singer, 2 points for the keyboard player, 3 points for each of the crowd and nowt for the Bouncer cos everybody knew him!! By the way I want the maiden names for the women.
