  7. Thank you all for the best wishes, it didn't snow last night and it is finally above 0c, it's a GREAT day in GC!
  8. Bad drivers! with no lane discipline! this past month I have done a awful lot of winter driving, and the people who "pick a random lane†and crawl at 1 or 2 kmh faster or slower for 50, 60 km oblivious to the rest of the world, and road conditions, unfortunately they are usually either seniors or texters! I can sympathise with you Brian as many of our roads are not paved.
  9. Welcome to the Forum Colin, the Forum is a great place to advertise upcoming events etc but a little more information would certainly help attract attention! What type of entertainment is it? is there any age group targeted? is it fundraising? Respectfully submitted, Good luck with the event.
  10. It was as you say Keith, we needed a sponsor and job offer to get into Canada, we brought the mother-in-law (who didn't receive pension/benefits for 15 years) It is still the same today for white Europeans, but the flood gates are wide open for non white ethnic minorities, rusty old ships are beached and we open our doors for Tamils, Asians etc. They receive greater benefits than we do. Most of them migrate to the major cities and do not even try and assimilate to become Canadians, then they send home for their families! Grande Cache has a very diverse population, (originally from all of the mining countries) I have friends from every corner of the world, but they became Canadians!
  11. We have a Subway, I remember going there, once... Also sorry to go off topic but your not alone Keith, it is the same here in Canada and I think Brian will tell you it's the same down under, the minority has taken over! If some of the important issues were put to a plebiscite we all know how it would go!(I'm sure when we become the minority things will change!)
  12. Have a great Brian, I hope you and your family continue to enjoy your new home!
  13. My next door neighbour is a trapper, he runs a trap line and makes a living at it, across the road there is a native family who hunt for all their meat. Most! (well half) my friends hunt for most of their meat, (hunting for non-natives is only allowed for a few weeks in the fall, controlled by the sale of hunting tags) a moose can fill a big freezer, elk is nice, deer are tasty, a couple of friends go up to the Yukon for trophy animals (usually sheep) to put on the wall, too each his own! it takes all sorts!
  14. HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE. George Phillips an elderly man from Bedlington, was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me. Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available." George said, "Okay." He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. "Hello,I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both, the dogs are eating them right now." and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George , "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
  15. Merry Christmas everyone!
  16. Shopping locally has its pro's and cons! we shop locally whenever we can afford too! (we tend to get gouged as they don't have any competition!) my wife remembers Pop and his sister Edie Clouson very well, Edie also ran a small shop. You can't beat the independent local butcher and baker etc for quality but it usually comes at a high cost as they don't have the volume purchasing abilities that the big companies have.
  17. Happy Birthday Pete.
  18. 6 weeks! you've got it beaten, keep yourself occupied, good luck!
  19. No chance of me buying them, but my wife would!
  20. My wife agrees Mikypotts, that was Beadle's paper shop, (that was where I bought my last packet of tabs! February 14th 1971!)
  21. Sort of good news, bad news! at least you have a couple of weeks to try and sort out the transportation dilemma, what is public transportation like now? car pooling? Good luck! Keep us posted.
  22. Sorry for steeling this thread Tez! bediesathome, Lock Hall was where Millfield Court is now, between the Black Bull and Dun Cow, the dance was upstairs from the COOP.
  23. Happy Birthday! 74 Front Street East, Bedlington
  24. Thank you 4G, and no snow ploughs or gritters needed!
