By Jove Symptoms, old bean, you can count Aye she's 101, still carrying sacks of coal to fuel my still in the potting shed, still running to the offy for my crate of 'dog' every night, still warming my wellies in front of the fire. I've recently bought her an ultra silent lawn mower to use, just push and it cuts, as her teeth aren't what they used to be and the lawn was starting to look a bit ragged. I really am too good to her....... I was born in December '55 and it seemed daft that my mother had to go to Rothbury to have me when there was a maternity home almost literally over the road, quarter of a mile away !!

At least they had the decency to keep off the A697, could you imagine the disruption to traffic with all that fighting and bludgeoning going on. Some of them were walking home across the fields to Yetholm after a darts match in the Red Lion at Millfield when they got jumped on by some Jocks who had been slung off the bus on their way from Coldstream to Wooler.

suffragettes Emily Wilding Davison

...... and the actions of that young lady with a message really increased those risks several fold. -
I had unlimited access to the back door to Carricks when we lived at the Market Place....... no wonder I ended up a bloater.

Funny thing is, my parents lived at West Farm Nedderton with my granparents at the time I was born (my grandfather was the herdsman for Brian Cazaly at the time) The entrance to the farm is on the right just past Stannington Lane end and just a couple of hundred yards before the Taylor Homes. Now you would think that I would be born there, ..... nope, born in Rothbury. To top it all my dad took my mam to hospital in a sidecar during one of the worst winter storms in recent years. There you see, I was neglected from the start !!. The wife was born in the Taylor homes in 1912.

So if he retired at 70, it must have been 1941(not 1951) either that or he worked till he was 80. (that's if you have his year of birth right)

Gordon Coulthard is my cousin -
Cobbler Green repaired all of my dads shoes and boots, he even did some old work boots for a friend of mine who was still wearing tackety boots for work in 1985 (ish) he actually said it was a pleasure to repair them instead of gluing things back together. He got a chance to use his equipment again. Personally, I would have chucked them in the bin !!

suffragettes Emily Wilding Davison
Keith Scantlebury replied to Maggie/915's topic in History Hollow
The last paragraph seems to sum it up. The scarf in the colours of the suffragette movement was still around her waist when she stepped out in front of the horse. Not the best place to be carrying something that you intend to pin to the bridle of a horse galloping towards you, I would have thought . -
Aye, as long as you have a food safety certificate

I was surprised to learn yesterday that permission is no longer needed for change of use. A shop could become a bookies, a pub could become a house, a butchers could become a payday loan company or a hairdressers could become a takeaway and no planning permission is needed. As from 1st June this year.

Symptoms, it wasn't just her life she endangered. Her actions could have just as easily killed others -

I cannot believe for one solitary minute that anyone could step into a group of galloping racehorses and expect to come back out and tell the tale. To even suggest that she intended only to pin colours to an animal weighing over half a ton and travelling at about 40 mph is ludicrous. This lady killed herself, its as simple as that. It is only pure luck that no-one else was killed that day and as I said earlier had she done it today she would have been charged with a criminal offence. -
Wonkys Spring Adventure And The Stena Plus Lounge

In '93 I was working for cattle breeding company (AI company). We were in Northern Ireland to meet with some of our customers over there and to give a talk / presentation in Belfast. Getting into N.I. a chore as they just about stripped the car out searching it, this had something to do with this big long tube that was just about the length of the car, now WE knew it was the screen for the over head projector . Coming back to Stranraer they were packing us in tight and they were directing cars right up to the bumper of the car in front. (for some reason, waiting till the occupants had left the vehicle before bringing the next car in) A good crossing and good feed (on the company). We were one of the first to be leaving the boat and we were in the car ready, the gaffer was an inpatient git anyway, as we were leaving the boat the guy in the car behind us was blowing his horn, screaming out the window a waving like mad and was right up our backside, the gaffer stopped and got out cussing, think he was going to chin this guy. They stood at the back of our car pointing and arguing and he came back all embarrassed, the car behind, a Granada was parked right up to ours a Citroen BX 19 with a tow bar. When the car started the suspension lifted, the tow bar was under the front bumper of the Granada and we were dragging it off the boat !! We could see the funny side but not the driver of the Granada . -

Did he not play cricket for Yorkshire? -
I enjoyed reading that Eggy. It is a pretty apt story especially as the guest speaker at E.B.P.C.'s annual assembly was Martin Lawlor, C.E.O. of the Port of Blyth who was giving a talk about what is going on in and around the port.

When did I suggest that we should ban Asian owned corner shops ? I actually suggested that other stores (supermarkets / high st. and corner shops) stock and sell alcohol and tobacco products. I also pointed out that not all corner shop or Asian shop owners are Muslim. Now as far as I can remember, in another thread a couple of years ago, I made the point that the Asian shop owners have made a success of their businesses by shear hard work. Mr. Singh will get up at 5am for the papers and keep that shop open for our convenience till 10pm. When Mr. Smith had that shop it would be closed at 5pm. There's no doubting that there are good Muslims and bad Muslims, good Christians and bad Christians, good Jews and bad Jews.. so on and so on. It just so happens that it is the bad Muslims that are causing harm to the people of this country, who's to say that it wont happen to someone we know next ?. As always happens, the few spoil it for the many. -

I've never had an upgrade and to be honest, as wonky says, what's the point anyway. There was one former employer of mine, (no names but most of you will know them ) Found out that we drivers were getting our breakfast on the boat and it was included in the ticket price, he then tried to buy tickets without a breakfast included. When he found out that he couldn't as all "freight" tickets included a meal, he then tried to deduct the price of a breakfast from our night out money (overnight allowance). Then when drivers refused to do the job, he subbed the work out to another haulier. This was on the Stranraer to Larne route. He wasn't, and still isn't a bad man to work for, but the fella is that tight , he only breathes in. -
Northumbria Brewery at Fuggles, Aye Brian its still there.
